The Townhouse
Purchased by a family relocating from Australia, the property offered everything they had been searching for: character, history and the opportunity to embrace a slower, more grounded way of living. Working almost entirely from a distance, PHINA was entrusted with transforming the house before the family's arrival in Edinburgh, creating a home that felt deeply personal from day one.
Inspired by the clients' love of rich texture, collected objects and layered interiors, the design balances heritage with contemporary comfort. Original architectural features were celebrated, while bespoke joinery, carefully curated furnishings and considered material choices brought warmth, functionality and individuality to every room.
The result is a home that feels both timeless and welcoming, where every detail has purpose, every space has its own character, and the family's transition to a new life in Edinburgh was met with an immediate sense of belonging.
What made this project so special was the trust involved. The clients were relocating across the world and would only see the house once before completion, so our role extended far beyond design. Every decision had to be communicated with clarity, confidence and care. Coming from a contemporary Australian home, the clients were drawn to the complete contrast of Edinburgh's architectural character. Rather than modernising away the building's personality, we embraced it.
